Jobs and the Economy

Our current Congress has failed.

Government’s Role is Stability

Although it is not the government’s role to create jobs, it is the government’s responsibility to set the tone for job creation – and to ensure a fair playing field.

Our current Congress has failed.

It is impossible to expect job creation to accelerate or the economy to get substantially better without clear rules. We must stop excessive regulations, curb taxes, and stop picking winners and losers in what should be a free market.

Too many individuals in their productive work years have been forced out of the market or underemployed. New college graduates are unsure about job possibilities and can’t find jobs in the marketplace – much less their chosen field.

In our 5th Congressional District nearly 30,000 people are unemployed, more than 8.5 percent of the total labor force. In El Paso County this rate hovers at 8.7 percent, while unemployment in Fremont County is at 9.3 percent. It’s even worse than these numbers suggest: These recent statistics (January 2012) exclude thousands of underemployed citizens and those who have lost hope of finding work.

This is unacceptable.

There must be a focus to chop away at an overbearing big government, to clarify the rules, and to create policies that invest control in the business owners and employers.
